The officials settled the on-court question with a Flagrant 2.

The decision did not settle the controversy.

After reviewing DiJonai Carrington’s high contact on Sophie Cunningham, the officiating crew identified the elements that elevated the foul: windup, impact, follow-through, contact above the shoulders and the injury risk created by Cunningham being airborne.

Carrington was ejected. Indiana received the additional free throw and retained possession.

Under the ruling announced on the court, it appeared to be a completed incident: dangerous contact, video review, upgraded penalty and automatic removal.

Minutes later, Carrington transformed it into something much larger.

From outside the game, she posted: “WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever.”

Those words reframed the story. The argument was no longer limited to whether Carrington’s arm had made excessive contact. It became a dispute over whether different players receive different treatment for similar conduct—and whether race affected how this particular confrontation was judged.

The timing made the allegation especially explosive.

Carrington had been one of Chicago’s most effective players during her short appearance. She scored eight points in roughly four minutes before being removed with 1:59 remaining in the first quarter.

The Sky ultimately lost 90–86 after recovering from a substantial deficit and making a serious fourth-quarter push. Removing a player who had provided that much immediate offense carried a real competitive cost, even though the ejection happened early.

The ruling itself was grounded in the physical characteristics of the play.

Carrington chased Cunningham during a breakaway. Cunningham elevated for a layup. Carrington’s left arm came down across Cunningham’s head and neck, knocking her to the floor as the shot went in.

Replay showed contact that officials considered unnecessary and excessive—the distinction that separates a Flagrant 2 from a lower-level foul.

Carrington’s post did not directly challenge any single replay element. It challenged the system surrounding the decision.

That distinction matters.

A viewer can conclude that the Flagrant 2 was correctly applied while still believing the league should examine whether reactions, reputations and public narratives influence how players are treated. Conversely, questioning consistency does not automatically prove that this particular ejection was wrong.

Cunningham rejected Carrington’s racial interpretation.

She said the incident had “nothing to do with race” and pointed to her own previous ejection for a comparable hard foul as evidence that Carrington’s punishment followed the same standard. She also maintained that Carrington’s contact was intentional and suggested the Chicago guard had unresolved frustration despite the two having no established personal feud.

Fever coach Stephanie White took a more measured position.

White did not believe Carrington deliberately intended to strike Cunningham across the neck. At the same time, she agreed that the severity of the actual contact justified the ejection.

That position separates intention from responsibility: Carrington may have pursued the ball without planning to hurt Cunningham, but she was still accountable for the dangerous result.

Chicago coach Tyler Marsh initially defended the basketball nature of the attempt. From his live view, Carrington appeared to be making a play on the ball, and he questioned whether the action warranted a Flagrant 2. He also said he had not yet reviewed the replay when offering that assessment.

Another source of controversy was Cunningham’s response.

After hitting the floor, she immediately approached Carrington and made physical contact while teammates intervened. Cunningham did not receive a technical foul. The crew later explained that her reaction was considered acceptable because of the severity of the original contact.

For supporters of the decision, that was reasonable discretion: Cunningham had just been struck while defenseless in the air and reacted emotionally.

For critics, it offered more fuel for the double-standard argument. If one player was ejected for excessive contact, they asked, why was the other player permitted to move toward her without even a technical?

That comparison is emotionally powerful but incomplete. The original foul and the ensuing reaction were different actions governed by different standards. Officials could consistently determine that Carrington’s contact met the Flagrant 2 criteria while concluding that Cunningham’s brief response did not require another penalty.

The broader issue is trust.

Fans rarely evaluate controversial calls in isolation. They compare them with past incidents, player reputations and the punishments—or lack of punishments—they remember. When enforcement appears inconsistent, even a technically defensible ruling can become evidence in a larger argument.

Carrington’s post entered that environment immediately.

It did not overturn the replay evidence. It ensured that the conversation would extend far beyond the replay.

The on-court question has the clearest answer: Carrington’s high contact, follow-through and Cunningham’s vulnerable position gave officials a defensible basis for the Flagrant 2.

The remaining question is harder.

Can the WNBA convince players and fans that those standards are applied consistently—especially when identical actions can be interpreted through dramatically different reputations, histories and social narratives?

The referee announced an ejection.

The aftermath turned it into a referendum on something much bigger.
